Robert Redford Death Leads To Murder Case Being Reopened

The death of Robert Redford has sparked authorities to revisit a murder case from years past.

Back in 1983, Sid Wells, boyfriend of Robert’s daughter Shauna, was fatally shot at his apartment. At the time, Robert was in production for the movie The Natural. Shauna and Sid were students at the University of Colorado Boulder.

Robert rushed to be with his daughter when he got word of the devastating news. The case that had gone cold for years may be solved sooner rather than later with a reward on the table.

After Sid’s death, the police believed they may have found the man who murdered him.

Unfortunately, the district attorney of Boulder County decided not to lay formal charges against Thayne Alan Smika at that time due to insufficient evidence. The roommate of Sid then disappeared in 1986, according to RadarOnline. No one has been able to track him down.

In 2009, new Boulder district attorney Stan Garnett took another look at the case. He decided to use modern DNA testing. The following year, a warrant for Sid’s ex-roommate was issued.

A manhunt to locate him after all these years in underway with the FBI announcing after Robert’s death that they are revisiting this matter. They are hoping that a monetary incentive can help them find Thayne. A $10,000 reward has been offered for anyone who may have information about the suspect’s whereabouts.

Robert died on September 16 at the age of 89. He had requested a simple funeral before his death, asking for only his family to attend the service.

When the case was reopened, Robert called to thank Stan for keeping the case in their attention after such a long time. Bail for Thayne has been preset at $5 million if he is caught.
