Sydney Sweeney faces backlash over her German accent in the historical survival thriller film Eden. The film is about a group of discouraged European settlers attempting to make a home on a faraway island in the Galápagos. The citizens soon realise that they must combat greed, violence, and betrayal in an attempt to survive. (via Irish Star).
The 28-year-old actress plays the role of real-life German settler Margret Wittmer. Wittmer and her husband moved to the Galápagos Islands in the 1930s, hoping to start life anew. Notably, the couple’s experience of living on the island was documented in her 1959 biography. It was published in English, titled Floreana: A Woman’s Pilgrimage to the Galápagos.
Eden, directed by Ron Howard, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year. The film was released in theatres in August this year and dropped on streaming on October 24. Eden received a mixed reception upon release, particularly for Sweeney over her German accent.
The film quickly rose up the streaming ranks on Prime Video. However, fans are criticising Sweeney’s poor imitation of a German accent. One fan commented, “My favorite part of this movie was when Sydney Sweeney stopped trying to do a German accent and just started doing a British one by the end of the movie.”
Another cinephile pointed, “Casting Sydney Sweeney in a movie that takes place in the 1920s and making her do her lines in the worst German-American accent ever attempted has to be one of the oddest choices in the history of cinema.”
One internet user did not spare her co-stars Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby either. The fan wrote, “Is it Eden? The one where Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas & Vanessa Kirby compete to see who can do the worst ‘ZE GERMANS’ accent?” Finally, a user penned, “Sydney Sweeney was struggling with that accent, Jesus….”
Sydney Sweeney’s next release is the sports biopic film Christy. The film will be released on November 7.
