King Charles isn’t afraid of a bit of dark humor. The monarch recently visited a health center in London. While speaking to former servicemen and women, he made a rather morbid joke. He also referenced a secret surgery he had after a very aristocratic injury.
King Charles spoke about the “endless plates and screws” in his arm

Charles visited Chatfield Health Care on Wednesday. The clinic specializes in providing help to former servicemen and women. During his visit, the King spoke to veterans about their experiences dealing with PTSD and access to healthcare once leaving the service.
One former serviceman, David Wiggins, revealed he had broken his arm after a bike accident. He told Charles that he had needed three plates put in his arm to fix it.
The King said he could relate – “I’ve got endless plates and screws in my arm as well.” He then joked: “All that’s left of you when you drop dead is ‘Made in Switzerland,'” per People.
Charles was hospitalized in 1990 after breaking his arm. The cause? An overenthusiastic game of polo. His hospitalization was kept secret for many years after the fact.
The monarch also spoke to medical staff during his visit to the health center. One doctor told him that veterans often don’t seek treatment as they don’t want to be a burden to anyone.
Charles replied: “The difficulty I suspect is that when you leave the forces, then you’re leaving that whole family of your unit. You’re suddenly left wondering what to do.” He said that the services offered by the center must be a great help.
The King continues to receive treatment for cancer, after being diagnosed last year. In September, he made a rare reference to his own health battle while speaking to a fellow cancer patient.
