He’s a retired rapper, the mayor-elect of New York City, and a Love Island USA fan! Ahead of his historic election win, Zohran Mamdani did an interview with Vulture where he admitted to tuning into the latest season of Peacock’s hit dating show. Just like the rest of us, he fell in love with Amaya “Papaya” Espinal.

We can thank Maria Bamford for getting this information out of Mamdani. Vulture is currently doing a series with the beloved comedian called the Maria Bamford Questionnaire, and that’s how we got this tidbit about his love for Love Island.
“I watched a little bit of Love Island USA,” Mamdani admitted. “ That was a good time.”
When asked to name his favorite couple, he gave a shoutout to none other than Amaya Papaya. Everyone loves her, but she got bonus points from Mamdani because she’s a fellow New Yorker. Hilariously, there was zero mention of her co-winner and ex-boyfriend, Bryan Arenales.
“Amaya Papaya, New York City resident. Brooklyn’s own,” he said, before an off-camera producer tried correcting him, noting that she’s actually from the Bronx.
Mamdani replied, “No? Isn’t it Brooklyn? Okay, the reason that I know this is because recently I saw an interview where it was described that she was from the Bronx, but the comments said she was actually from Brooklyn.”
So, which is it? We’re not sure, and unfortunately, they couldn’t get to the bottom of it either. The clip ended with the mayor-elect asking Amaya for a little bit of help. She’s the only one who can put this mystery to rest. Which borough did you come from?
Mamdani jokingly pleaded, “Amaya, please! Help me.”
