Ariana Grande Wins Minimalistic Glam in Strapless Dress

Ariana Grande continues to prove she’s a modern-day style icon. For her latest appearance, the singer-actor channeled timeless elegance in a vintage Christian Dior dress from the Fall/Winter 1952 Haute Couture collection, accessorized with Swarovski jewelry. The look, styled by fashion architect Law Roach, was shared on his Instagram with the caption, “And THEN this happened…,” sending fans and fashion watchers into a frenzy.

Red carpets often favor bold statements and over-the-top couture. This time, however, Ariana Grande chose a refreshingly classic route, one that paid homage to the golden era of fashion. Styled by Law Roach for a New York Times feature, she wore an archival black Dior gown from 1952, originally designed by Christian Dior himself. The strapless piece is characterized by its sculpted bodice and voluminous skirt. As such, it encapsulated the post-war “New Look” silhouette that became a hallmark of Dior’s early designs.

Grande’s interpretation of the look was perfectly modern yet respectful of its heritage. Her hair was styled in a sleek, pulled-back bun that allowed the structured neckline to take center stage. She paired the gown with delicate Swarovski jewelry, including a small crystal pendant and subtle stud earrings. Indeed, restraint can be the ultimate form of luxury. Not to mention, her makeup was soft and ethereal. It featured fluttery lashes, a natural-looking blush, and a glossy nude lip that accentuated her glowing complexion.

The look marks a departure from Grande’s recent “method dressing” for her upcoming movie, “Wicked: For Good,” in which she plays Glinda the Good Witch. While her promotional looks have leaned toward soft pastels and fairytale aesthetics, this Dior moment brings her back to classic Old Hollywood glamor. As for the photos, they exude a quiet confidence. They showcase a grounded version of the pop star who once made oversized sweatshirts and high ponytails her signature.
