Sydney Sweeney says that her role as a boxing star has changed her. She plays Christy Martin in the new movie. For this biopic, she had to go through months of training and a dramatic physical transformation. However, this left her feeling tougher and more driven than before.
Sydney Sweeney talks about the aftermath of the boxing movie
Sydney Sweeney worked for months to prepare for the boxing role. She gained 30 pounds and learnt how to box so that the ring work would look real. She says, “I feel like I’ve taken a little bit of Christy’s strength,” the actress says. “I feel like I got her fire inside me and some fight inside me. I got a mean left hook. I’m ready to pounce whenever.” (via People)
Sweeney claims that the training period was quite “challenging,” but she got through it with a smile. She expressed, “The boxing was challenging in its own right, but it was so much fun. “I didn’t want to leave the ring. It was a blast. We were hitting each other. There were bloody noses. I got a concussion. Christy was screaming in the corner about what I should be doing next. She’s like, ‘Hit her with a left!’ I felt like I was in a real fight.”
While talking about the role and reading the script, Sydney Sweeney was shocked that she had not heard of Christy Martin. This is what inspired her to take up the part. The actress said, “I was just completely shocked that I didn’t know who Christy was. When I first read the script, I almost felt bad that I hadn’t heard of Christy’s story because I was like, everybody needs to know who she is. She is so inspiring, and her story will resonate and mean so much to so many people. I was like, I need to make sure that I’m a part of making the next generation know who she is and have her as a role model.”
The real Christy Martin, who worked with Sydney Sweeney and trained her in boxing, praised the actress’s commitment to the role. After talking with her and feeling her “grounded” nature, Martin had decided that she wanted to share her story with the world through her.
