The confusion over the former Prince Andrew’s name has officially been cleared up. King Charles III recently stripped his younger brother of all royal titles. He announced that his new name is Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
However, going forward, Andrew will be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The hyphenated version of his surname is used for his parents’ Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s direct descendants.

On October 30, Buckingham Palace announced that the former prince would be stripped of all royal titles. Both the hyphenated and non-hyphenated versions of the last name were previously used. It was announced this hyphenated version will now be Andrew’s official name.
Sixty-five years ago, Andrew’s parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, linked the last names affiliated with their families for their descendants in 1960. The Queen’s family used the Windsor surname starting in 1917. Prince Philip’s Mountbatten surname was adopted by his family before he was married and after he was a naturalized British citizen. His family originated from Greece and Denmark.
This history is detailed on the royal family’s website, where it states, “It was therefore declared in the Privy Council that The Queen’s descendants, other than those with the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince/Princess, or female descendants who marry, would carry the name of Mountbatten-Windsor. The effect of the declaration was that all the Queen’s children, on occasions when they needed a surname, would have the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.”
The former Prince Andrew’s titles were stripped in response to the controversy surrounding his alleged involvement with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Andrew is featured prominently in the book, Nobody’s Girl, written by Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was trafficked to Andrew. He settled out of court for an undisclosed amount and denies any wrongdoing. Virginia died by alleged suicide last April.
