Travis Kelce’s dominance over the past decade has secured his place in NFL history, but discussions about how the tight end compares to others remain ongoing. This week, one legendary player weighed in, saying he believes he edges out Kelce in certain areas while admitting the Kansas City Chiefs star surpasses him in others.
NFL legend comments on Travis Kelce
Former New England Patriots player Rob Gronkowski opened up about the tight end debate, acknowledging that Kelce’s Hall of Fame résumé speaks for itself but insisting that the comparison isn’t one-sided.
Speaking on the Dan Patrick Show, Gronkowski addressed the long-standing debate about the greatest tight end of all time. He referenced the crowded field of elite names at the position, with the interviewer noting the difficulty in separating players like Gronkowski, Kelce, Tony Gonzalez, and Antonio Gates.
Gronkowski echoed that sentiment while stating, “In many ways, Travis Kelce is better than myself, and, in many ways, I would say that I’m better than Travis Kelce,” he said. “There are so many variables and tangibles that go into it because we’re kind of different players, but we play the same position still.” He further used a food analogy to drive home just how different their styles are. “I’m steak and he’s sushi,” he said. “It’s just what you want that night for dinner.”
The NFL legend further explained, “If I’m in a package where it’s an old-school offense, it’s about running the ball, play action, being in the trenches and beating down the other team, I would take myself.” He added, “But in this day and era with the offense that Travis Kelce is in, I feel like he fits way better in his offense that he’s in, and I don’t think I would be able to contribute the way he does.”
