Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sanchez ‘Quietly Seize Control’ of Met Gala — Source

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are drawing attention in the fashion world once again. But this time, insiders claim the couple is gaining real influence behind the scenes of the Met Gala. As the lead donors for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2026 “Costume Art” exhibition, industry chatter suggests their role may extend far beyond financial support.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos are calling the shots at Met Gala, claims source

According to a longtime Met insider speaking to reporter Rob Shuter, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have “quietly seized control” of the Met Gala’s direction. This is due to their major sponsorship of the upcoming 2026 exhibition.

The source alleges that while Anna Wintour still carries enormous cultural weight, the balance of power is shifting. “They aren’t just donors. Jeff is writing the checks. Lauren is making the calls,” the insider claims. They add that the couple is increasingly viewed as the force shaping the event’s future.

If true, their expanding footprint comes at a moment of transition within Condé Nast, where Wintour recently announced plans to step back from her leadership role. Some observers have even speculated that Bezos may be exploring a potential acquisition of Condé Nast.

These rumors were further fueled after Sanchez appeared on Vogue’s digital cover in a wedding gown selected with Wintour’s involvement. None of these theories has been confirmed. However, the speculation illustrates how closely the couple’s name is now linked with the future of luxury fashion media.

Beyond the gossip, their influence is cemented in public record. The Met’s official release for its 2026 exhibition explicitly states, “The exhibition is made possible by Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Bezos.” Their position as lead donors means the pair’s support is central to the show, which will pair 200 artworks with 200 garments to explore 5,000 years of fashion history. It also marks the first Met Gala overseen by Vogue’s new Head of Editorial Content, Chloe Malle.

Sources cited by Shuter allege that Sanchez has taken a hands-on role. She is reportedly contacting designers directly and advocating for a more glamorous, star-driven aesthetic. As Shuter calls it, she may be on her way to becoming “the new celebrity whisperer.”
