There is a lot of dirty laundry being aired about the Dreyfuss family. Richard Dreyfuss’ son, Ben Dreyfuss, is sharing how difficult things are between him and his Academy Award-winning dad. “We’ve been estranged ever since some complicated family drama to do with MeToo,” said Ben.
The MeToo situation dates back to 2017. That’s when the MeToo movement was starting to pick up steam. Ben’s brother Harry accused Kevin Spacey of groping him, with Ben writing a post on X, formerly Twitter, in support of him. This prompted someone to MeToo Richard.
According to Ben, their father blamed the kids for the incident. Kevin’s lawyer at the time denied the allegations.

The term nepo baby is often used to describe the kids of celebrities, but according to Ben, that does not apply with him and his dad. In a series of deleted X posts, Ben said (via USA Today), “My dad has no money. If he did, we wouldn’t get it since we’ve been estranged.” In July Richard’s estimated net worth was around $4 million.
It appears Ben and Richard haven’t been super friendly with one another. Ben alleges that he and his father had some heated email exchanges in the past. In January 2024, Ben apparently tried to explain to him his actions at a family dinner. He says he poorly explained his complicated feelings regarding nepotism.
Ben claims that he wanted to make amends with his father, but it seems the Jaws actor was having none of it. He adds that his dad apparently wrote an all-caps response to his e-mail. In in he allegedly says that this would be the last message he sends his son unless he stops being a coward.
According to Ben, that’s the last correspondence the two have had. For his part, Ben has said that he’s always loved his father and thinks he’s better than the e-mail he allegedly sent him.
Ben’s sister, Emily, is a journalist who said she’s happy and relieved about what her brother shared, and that it’s all out in the open.
