Viewers of NBC’s Today Show were surprised to find that Craig Melvin was not sitting at his normal chair alongside fellow cohost Savannah Guthrie on Wednesday. At the time of writing, there has been no announcement from Melvin or Today on their social media accounts, which has sparked questions on where he is. This comes amid prior rumors that Melvin was leaving the show after he posted a farewell message on Instagram in mid-November that confused fans on where he was going. Here’s why the 46-year-old anchor was absent or missing on November 26.
Where is Craig Melvin on The Today Show on November 26?
At the top of The Today Show on Wednesday, Guthrie had to explain why Craig Melvin was abruptly missing and replaced by Willie Geist, who normally covers the show on Sunday.
The only insight she gave was that Melvin wanted to get “a jump on the Thanksgiving holiday” without delving into specifics. It could be that he wanted to prepare for the holiday beforehand or get ahead of the traffic and travel to his a relative’s home for the annual celebration.
Concerns that Melvin would be leaving the popular NBC show grew when the anchor wrote a retrospective post on Instagram that mentioned his “unforgettable memories with amazing colleagues.”
The anchor is not expected to be on The Today Show on Thanksgiving either during the program’s regular coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year the event will be hosted by Guthrie and weatherman Al Roker, with the pair being joined by special guest Hoda Kotb after she retired from the show about a year ago (and who was effectively replaced by Melvin). This isn’t too much of a surprise given that Hoda has covered the parade numerous times before.
That said, Kotb has been seen in various Today segments within recent months, so there have been rumors that she might be coming back in a more regular capacity.
