James Cameron comments on working with Elon Musk
During his conversation with Matthew Belloni on his The Town podcast, Hollywood director James Cameron shared his views about collaborating with Elon Musk in the future. As Cameron spoke about AI and humans occupying another planet, he mentioned Musk in the conversation. “I never could have anticipated Elon Musk and how he’s transformed spaceflight,” said Cameron. “And when Elon and I get together, we jam on rocket engines. We don’t talk about politics,” he added. He also mentioned that he knew Musk from when he was part of the Mars Society in 1998-99.
Cameron continued to share, “We were pals there for a while. I mean, politically, I don’t agree with him on a lot of stuff… But, I certainly respect what he’s done in the space sector. I think it’s quite remarkable.” This led the host to ask Cameron whether he’d be open to formally collaborating with the SpaceX CEO. The Titanic director responded saying, “Maybe. I can separate a person and their politics from the things that they want to accomplish if they’re aligned with what I think are good goals. I just think it’s important for us as a human civilization to prioritize—we’ve got to make this Earth our spaceship. That’s really what we need to be thinking.”
When the Belloni then asks if Musk doesn’t agree, Cameron goes on to explain how asteroids could take out humans at any point saying, “We could be no better than the dinosaurs looking up and going ‘Whaaaat?!’ right now. So I think it’s good that he is doing it, but I don’t think all of us should jump on that bandwagon and be ready to sacrifice the Earth.”
