George Clooney recently addressed the prospect of his retirement from his acting career. In a new interview, he said he had no plans to step away from film sets for the foreseeable future, stressing that he could still land roles in films even if he got older. He also said that it was important for his career to continue, lest he lose his place in “society.”
George Clooney talks about retirement
In a recent interview with USA Today, George Clooney was asked if he would eventually realize that it was time to stop acting or if he would continue his career until his “wheels fall off.”
“They’re falling off already. Leg falls off every once in a while,” the Wolfs actor quipped. He added that his father, Nick Clooney, was still pursuing his journalism career despite being almost 92 years old. “It’s important to stay active,” he further stated. “I mean, you’re a writer. I can’t imagine you saying, ‘Well, now that I’m 70, maybe I shouldn’t write anymore.'”
The 64-year-old emphasized that since he was pursuing a creative field, he could continue acting and pursue his career in whichever way he wanted. He added that getting older would not hamper his career in any way, as he could still find parts to play in films. “There’s going to be parts for ‘Grandpa gums bread, ‘ and I’ll be the perfect guy for it,” he stated. “That’s a good thing about the profession that I’ve chosen.”
However, Clooney acknowledged aging’s impact on his life. He recalled a conversation he had with his wife, Amal, after he turned 60. “I said, ‘Look, I can still play basketball with the boys. I play with 25-year-old guys. I can still hang, I’m in shape,'” he recalled. Clooney continued, “But in 25 years, I’m 85 years old. It doesn’t matter how many granola bars you eat, that’s a real number.”
The Ocean’s Eleven actor stressed the importance of continuing his career. He said, “If you give up working, you lose your place in society.” However, he clarified that spending time with family and loved ones was incredibly important. He added that he and his wife have become better at spending time with their children, acknowledging that while he wasn’t perfect, he and Amal did their best. Clooney also said that he didn’t resent his parents for missing events in his childhood, as he understood that they were working hard to ensure the family was fed.
