Gwen Stefani’s Sheer Gown With Lots of Tulle Looks Like a Mess

Gwen Stefani brought high-wattage glamor and an avalanche of tulle to the New York premiere of Amazon’s Christmas dramedy “Oh. What. Fun.” The “Luxurious” singer instantly dominated the carpet with a look that begged to be discussed. Her sheer Vera Wang gown delivered spectacle in spades, but whether it delivered coherence is another story.

Gwen Stefani opts for Vera Wang gown with sheer paneling and too much tulle

At Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Gwen Stefani arrived in a gown that felt equal parts couture experiment and Christmas morning chaos. Designed by Vera Wang, the piece featured a sheer black corset base wrapped in swirls of green tulle, creating a geometric, deconstructed effect across the bodice.

From there, the fabric exploded into a dramatic two-tone skirt, with layers of black and green tulle billowing into a mermaid silhouette that overwhelmed her frame. The gown clearly aimed for architectural drama, but the competing elements, like the sheer paneling, dueling colors, and voluminous tulle, never quite harmonized.

Instead, the Vera Wang gown seemed to pull focus in every direction at once. The top half suggested ethereal elegance, while the bottom half leaned into costume-level theatrics. On a holiday-themed red carpet, whimsy is expected. Here, however, it edged into visual overload.

Stefani’s styling added another level of contrast. Her platinum-blonde hair, worn pin-straight and parted down the middle, offered a clean canvas but clashed with the piece’s textured chaos. Moreover, the ultra-light color and soft styling heightened the disconnect. As such, a warmer tone or a sleeker, edgier approach might have balanced the volume below.

As for accessories, the 56-year-old wore several rings, including her engagement and wedding bands, plus a notable emerald-and-diamond flower ring thought to be a nod to husband Blake Shelton. The jewelry was stunning, but only added to the visual busyness of an already maximalist look.

Despite the criticisms, the look wasn’t without its strengths. The craftsmanship and ambition behind the gown were clear. Moreover, Stefani’s confidence carried the ensemble as far as it could go. Perhaps with fewer competing elements or a clearer focal point, the piece might have soared. Instead, it felt like an ambitious idea that became lost beneath its own layers of tulle.
