Actor Tobey Maguire and his ex-wife Jennifer Meyer are now on good terms after their 2020 divorce. The couple, who were married from 2007 to 2017, are co-parenting daughter Ruby, 19, and son Otis, 15.
It took time for the couple to come to a good place, but they are now great friends for the sake of their children. Jennifer credits actress Gwyneth Paltrow for helping her remain friendly with the Superman actor.
Jennifer Meyer called ex-husband Tobey Maguire her “best friend”
On the December 1 episode of Maeve Reilly’s The Inside Edit podcast, Jennifer called her divorce “one of my greatest teachers. It teaches you patience, and you’re also raising [kids together].”
Jennifer initially kept the breakup under wraps. “[After] Tobey and I had broken up, we were still living together. We didn’t tell anybody because we didn’t want the kids to know,” she said.
She added that there was not one event that led to the breakup and that the relationship ran its course. “It was just time to call it, and it was hard because we really loved each other and cared about each other,” she explained. “When two people are breaking up, you kind of hate each other for a minute. You want to hate each other because you’re, like, ‘This will make the breakup easier.’”
Jennifer said that seeing her friend Gwyneth and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin’s post-divorce relationship gave her perspective. She recalls, “One day [around] 10 years ago, I went over to Gwyneth Paltrow’s house … in the middle of a workday. Her ex-husband, Chris, walks into the house [and] doesn’t ring a doorbell. He was like, ‘Yeah, I was in the neighborhood, so I thought I would come over and do homework with Apple.’ She was like, ‘Oh my, God, great. I’m making quesadillas. Do you want one?’”
This was in sharp contrast to Jennifer’s parents’ divorce, which she described as “like war.” Gwyneth recommended a therapist, who helped Jennifer and Tobey stay on good terms. “I now have an ex-husband who is my best friend and would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him — anything in the world. He is] the best dad, the best ex-husband, the best friend [and] the most generous.”
