Ana de Armas recently made an appearance at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia and talked about doing action movies. The actress explained that she had never planned to work in action films, but she accidentally found herself starring in the genre. She also discussed various industry friendships and some career-defining moments, among other things.
Ana de Armas opens up about doing action movies
Ana de Armas told the festival audience during an In Conversation session that her move into action roles wasn’t planned. “I never thought of myself as athletic or imagined I’d do action movies. It started with No Time to Die, then The Gray Man and Ghosted, and Ballerina was another level — very challenging, very demanding. But it was also an exciting character to play, and I really loved expanding that universe” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
While acting in action films, the actress had to endure the intense physical demands of the roles. These had pushed her to develop skills she didn’t expect she’d need. She said, “The training was brutal. It went on for months before shooting and continued during filming. There’s no time to rehearse everything, so you’re learning and adapting on the spot. It was exhausting — but I enjoyed it. I learned so much.”
Ana de Armas then talked about her connection with Keanu Reeves. She recalled first coming to Los Angeles and working on Eli Roth’s Knock Knock. She revealed that she “barely” spoke any English, but Reeves was always “kind and generous” towards her. For her, reuniting with the actor during the set of Ballerina felt like a “full circle” moment.
