Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s fall from grace unfolded step by step over the past few years. His reputation collapsed as scrutiny grew around his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Public backlash forced him out of official royal duties and pushed him away from the center of royal life. He later surrendered his military titles and stopped using HRH, which signaled a sharp break from the status he once held. Those changes left him isolated within the family, reliant on royal support, and fighting to keep the one major asset he still controlled: Royal Lodge.
Now, the fight over his housing will shape how he’ll spend Christmas.
The former Prince Andrew has a “sad” Christmas ahead, according to insiders

Andrew agreed to leave Royal Lodge for a smaller home on the Sandringham Estate. The transition was supposed to happen before Christmas. However, delays and concerns about the new property’s readiness pushed the timeline into next year.
A source told Radar, “He’s lived in that big house for many years, and since he’s moving to a smaller place, it’s unlikely the move will happen before Christmas.” Another insider described him as “sad, lonely, and stubborn” as he resists leaving.
He returned the Royal Lodge lease to The Crown Estate on October 30. Sources believe this decision protected Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie from further embarrassment. He still stays in the 31-room mansion. One insider said, “He’s treating it almost like a squatter situation, staying put until everything is completely ready for his move.” They added, “It is typical, Andrew – pathetic, childish, and ridiculous.”
The delay also reduces tension for the royal family. A palace source claimed, “The family feels relieved he won’t be there for Christmas. It spares everyone an awkward situation with the senior royals after such a turbulent year.”
Another insider added, “Change isn’t his strong suit, particularly when it means giving up familiar comforts…”
His circle has narrowed as well. A courtier claimed, “He’s going through a lonely period, but he’s opting for privacy. He knows people are watching, yet he isn’t willing to be hurried.”
While the senior royals gather at Sandringham, Andrew will remain at Royal Lodge. One insider summed it up. “He’s feeling sad, lonely, and stubborn. Staying put allows him to cling to some sense of normalcy in what’s been an extremely challenging year.”
