Sydney Sweeney is opening up about the backlash to her recent American Eagle ad. The actress, who has faced intense online debate over the denim campaign, says the public response caught her off guard and led her to speak out after initially staying silent.
Sydney Sweeney was truly ‘surprised’ by American Eagle backlash, says she’s ‘against hate’
In a new interview with PEOPLE, Sweeney reflects on the controversy surrounding the campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The ad debuted in late July this year and quickly became a trending topic online. Some critics alleged the campaign’s wordplay echoed ideas about “genetic superiority.” Meanwhile, others suggested the tone felt reminiscent of older denim ads that catered heavily to the male gaze. The actress says she never anticipated that level of interpretation.
“I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” she shared with PEOPLE. “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand.” She added that she doesn’t align with the interpretations some viewers attached to the campaign, saying she feels “motives were assigned” to her that don’t reflect who she is or what she stands for.
As commentary escalated, American Eagle responded publicly, reaffirming that the message was simply meant to highlight confidence and self-expression. The brand also emphasized the campaign was only ever “about the jeans.”
Sweeney says she decided to speak because remaining quiet began to feel counterproductive. She describes herself as someone who prioritizes kindness and unity, saying she doesn’t support divisiveness in any form. “I’m against hate,” she noted. Continuing further, she said that the experience made her rethink how silence can sometimes allow negative narratives to grow.
Away from the headlines, the “Euphoria” star is now shifting focus to her next major project, “The Housemaid,” directed by Paul Feig and based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling thriller. Sweeney says filming has been a rewarding experience, especially bonding with co-star Amanda Seyfried, who even crocheted her a custom bag during production.
Looking ahead, Sweeney hopes audiences walk out of theaters stunned, and maybe ready to watch the film again. “I want them to come back with their friends for more,” she says.
