A clip resurfaced on TikTok featuring an Oxford student questioning Camille Vasquez about how it felt as a woman defending Johnny Depp. The lawyer didn’t dodge the question, but she delved more into explaining the legalities of the Johnny and Amber Heard trial than talking about her personal feelings. But that was to be expected from a seasoned lawyer.
Camille Vasquez did her best to answer concerns over defending Johnny Depp
In the UK, in particular, it might seem concerning that Camille would defend Johnny. The UK court found 12 out of 14 abuse claims in the case “substantially true.”
“How did you feel as a woman not only defending but as you said, ‘going to care’ for a man who is already known as a prolific domestic abuser here in the UK,” the student said. “A man who said to the court, ‘Let’s drown her before we burn her, and I will f*ck her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead?’”
Instead of dodging the question, Camille explained how the cases were different across the pond. She pointed out that Amber Heard wasn’t a participant in the UK case. That means that she didn’t need to submit all the evidence and could pick and choose what to submit. She didn’t need to submit her phone or computer files. According to the lawyer, the courts viewed some of this evidence as doctored or contradictory to Amber’s story.
Additionally, Camille explained that in the UK, witnesses don’t get to tell their story freely. They can only answer questions in cross-examination. So she explained how the story came out was quite different.
According to Camille, this is because of the differences in the legal systems in the United Kingdom and the United States. And at the end of the day, different legal systems can lead to very different legal outcomes. According to Camille, she defended Johnny to the best of her ability as an attorney.
Netizens were divided. Some supported the student who raised a difficult question. Some supported Camille who answered as a lawyer should. She maintained that cases are about legal rules and evidence, not personal feelings.
It seems the case is still being discussed despite Amber and Johnny both focusing on new directions in their personal lives and their careers.
