Erika Kirk is addressing her infamous hug with JD Vance. She and the Vice President shared a warm embrace on stage during a Turning Point USA event in late October. The moment went viral and set off a bombshell of speculation about how close JD and Erika actually were.
Erika’s husband, Charlie, was assassinated during a Turning Point speaking engagement in September in Utah. Since his death, Erika has taken over as CEO of his political activist group.

The hug seen around the world between JD and Erika was a little too intimate, according to many. Nearly everything is scrutinized when you’re in the public eye, and this may be another example. The mother of three took time out of her busy day to speak to The Megyn Kelly Show at one of its podcast touring stops. She admits to hugging him and whispering “god bless you” in his ear while touching the back of JD’s head. However, for her, that’s just normal behavior. “Anyone whom I have hugged, I have touched the back of your head when I hug you,” she said.
Erika says that people made it seem like she’d touched the Vice President’s butt. She jokingly said that she may not have gotten as much hate if that were the case. That hug for some was yet another clue into JD’s reported breakup with his wife, Usha. The Second Lady was also seen not wearing her wedding ring on one occasion, fuelling further speculation of tensions between them.
When Charlie died, Erika said she prayed that she would be pregnant. She’s previously stated she wanted four children. She and Charlie had two together.
In her November interview with Megyn, she admitted that her late husband always knew there were threats. Erika has been praised for her grace amid tragedy, notably forgiving the man arrested in connection with Charlie’s shooting.
