A simple comment made during an interview is enough to stir up an online backlash storm. Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson is learning that the hard way. A comment he made during an interview was perceived as shade by Taylor Swift fans, and they let their displeasure be known online.
Josh Hutcherson is “very much not” a Taylor Swift fan
During an i-D magazine feature interview, Josh and English Teacher star Jordan Firstman joined a playful segment called Camera Roll Roulette. The game had the two reveal different photos from their camera roll based on random prompts.
The first prompt was “club.” To this, Jordan showed a video of people dancing to his song. Josh, however, didn’t have anything club-related on his phone. Instead, he scrolled to a snap at a concert. It was a sweet photo of him and his mom at the Taylor Swift Eras Tour.
“This is really cute,” Jordan said, showing the photo as Josh casually said, “My mom made me.”
Jordan asked Josh if he was a Swiftie. He replied, “I’m not a Swiftie. Very much not. No shade. All respect, but definitely not.”
This comment ended up rattling and upsetting Swifties online. While the comment wasn’t malicious, fans of The Life of a Showgirl hitmaker felt the shade, and some took it as a letdown. They felt that the visceral reaction was unnecessary.
It didn’t help that Jordan said, “A little bit of shade,” when Josh said, “No shade.” He was watching the actor scroll through his phone and remarked, “It’s all concert!”
Meanwhile, Taylor fans expressed outrage on social media. Some accused him of dropping her name for clout. Taylor has been all over the news since the release of her new album and high-profile engagement. One Swiftie trolled Josh, saying, “His career collapsed after The Hunger Games anyway.”
Some fans defended him, saying that not everyone has to be a Swiftie. However, others did point out that he didn’t need to say, “very much no.” A simple no would have been enough.
