Musician Charlie Puth spoke up after a SpaceX launch in Southern California shook his home in the middle of the night, leaving his pregnant wife frightened. The Falcon 9 rocket took off at 3:40 a.m. PT, sending 27 Starlink satellites into orbit, but the sonic boom, clocking at 150-160 decibels, rattled the house and ruined their sleep.
Elon Musk slammed by Charlie Puth over this disturbance
On Wednesday, Charlie Puth called out Elon Musk on social media, pointing out that SpaceX launches in Santa Barbara have been getting louder. “Hi @elonmusk…these sonic booms have gotten progressively louder since they started launching the rockets in Santa Barbara,” Puth wrote.
The singer shared that the 3 a.m. launch that day felt like it climbed high decibels, shaking his house and frightening his pregnant wife. He joked nervously that he hoped the noise wouldn’t get any worse. So far, Musk hasn’t responded, and SpaceX has yet to respond to the press’ questions.
“This one at 3 am today felt like 150-160 dB, violently shook our whole house, and really frightened my pregnant wife. I hope they do not get louder,” Puth wrote.
The Falcon 9 blasted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, sending another batch of Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. SpaceX notes on its website that residents in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties might hear sonic booms depending on weather and other conditions.
Experts warn that sounds above 120 decibels can be dangerous if you’re exposed for too long. Thus, Puth’s report of a 150-160 dB boom is concerning. SpaceX has its next launch in the area scheduled for the early morning of December 14.
Puth’s comment shines a light on the clash between SpaceX’s nonstop launch and the people living nearby. While getting Starlink satellites into orbit is key for the global internet. Locals have been raising alarms about sleepless nights, booming sonic blasts, and possible health risks.
Fans were quick to weigh in on the comment section with their own takes. One tagged Grok, jokingly asking for tips on how Puth could soundproof his house. Another suggested he rethink living so close to Vandenberg, while a third told him to call the HOA.
