Taylor Swift has opened up about her engagement to Travis Kelce, which took place earlier this year. In a new interview, the pop star admitted that her and the NFL tight end’s engagement wasn’t guaranteed. Swift and Kelce began dating in 2023, with their relationship coming under constant analysis from fans. As their relationship grew, fans speculated about their engagement plans until Swift and Kelce put the chatter to rest.
Taylor Swift talks about Travis Kelce engagement
In her appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Taylor Swift brought up Travis Kelce while mentioning three people whom she could talk to about “career, relationship, and friendship longevity,” the other two being Stevie Nicks and Max Martin. Notably, Swift’s mention of Kelce elicited cheers from the audience.
Stephen Colbert then congratulated Swift on her engagement to Kelce but corrected himself by saying, “best wishes” as she thanked him. The talk show host explained that “best wishes” was reserved for a girl, while “congratulations” was reserved for a boy.
“I never heard that until now,” Swift replied, jokingly adding, “Everyone’s been so rude.”
“Yes, it’s congratulations to the man because congratulations that you were able to get this wonderful woman,” Colbert elaborated. “And best wishes to the woman because it was a fait accompli, of course, you guys would get married.” Upon hearing this, Swift remarked, “That is so good to learn. I love this.”
Colbert subsequently asked Swift to discuss her wedding plans, to which she agreed. He showed a framed photo of her Instagram post from August 2025, announcing her engagement, which has received 37.6 million likes as of writing. Colbert praised the post, noting, “Everybody loved the way you posted it.” He quickly changed the subject by drawing attention to Swift’s two major accomplishments this year — the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, and reclaiming the rights to the masters of her first six albums.
Colbert remarked that the singer had a “good year,” which she concurred with. However, Swift said that her engagement to Kelce and getting her music back weren’t sure-fire things, saying they “never could have happened.” “They could’ve just never happened,” she added. “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, it’s just a matter of time.’”
“Like both those things could have just never arrived in my life,” she reiterated before expressing gratitude for both events happening.
