Note to theatergoers: if you’re likely to make a lot of noise during a show, you might want to have a quick scan of the audience first and check Patti Lupone isn’t in attendance. The Broadway legend is known for her strict enforcement of theater etiquette – and it’s not limited to her own shows. At a recent performance, the actress gave a fellow audience member a firm telling off for making too much noise.
Patti Lupone reportedly demanded of the theatergoer: “Never go to the theater again!”
No one likes a yapster at the theater, but most of us are probably a bit too self-conscious to give an obnoxious guest a dressing down. Well, Patti Lupone has no such problem.
The Broadway actress was enjoying a performance of Drew Droege’s Messy White Gays at the weekend, when a fellow audience member got a bit carried away.
A source told Page Six the woman “seemed more primed for a bachelorette party than off-Broadway.” The insider said the guest had made loud comments throughout the show, including “an inebriated cavalcade of four-letter words” and an enthusiastic cry of “Yes b*tch!”
Presumably, her fellow audience members weren’t impressed. Patti certainly wasn’t – she is said to have “cornered” the woman after the show, ordering her to “Never go to the theater again!”
Witnesses said the woman “quailed under the diva’s stony gaze and apologized.”
Patti has form for telling off theatergoers. While she may not have gone full JoJo Siwa and kicked an audience member out of a show, she has snatched many a phone from patrons mid-performance.
She previously said in a statement after one such incident: “It isn’t changing, it’s only getting worse. And it takes, it’s stressful. It’s incredibly stressful. So, I will think twice before I sign another Broadway contract. I really will.”
