Macaulay Culkin is revisiting his past and complicated childhood. The actor best known for the first two Home Alone movies had a rough upbringing with his parents especially his dad Kit. He and brother Kieran have described their estranged father as abusive and narcissistic.
Macaulay has two kids of his own, and says he often speaks about his admiration for them. Receiving compliments, he says, wasn’t something he got a lot of as a youngster. Macaulay was 10 years old when he starred in Home Alone, which became an instant hit.
Macaulay Culkin says it was rare to hear of his parents’ pride

Positive reinforcement it seems wasn’t a popular practice in the Culkin household years ago. Macaulay recently appeared on an episode of Mythical Kitchen. He said there’s one word he often uses around his family that he didn’t hear much growing up with his parents: “proud.”
“Man, I’m proud of my kids,” he continued. Macaulay had many major achievements as a youngster, including starring in Home Alone. That was previously the #1 movie for a time in 1990. He doesn’t just gush over his kids; he also gushes over his personal achievements, such as being able to “provide for my family.”
Macaulay and Kieran had a troubling upbringing, which was marred by tragedy when their sister Dakota died in 2008. During the taping of the first Home Alone film, the man who portrayed Kevin McCallister said that actor John Candy was like a fatherly figure for him. John had a small role in that movie, but he and Macaulay worked together when the late Canadian comedian starred in Uncle Buck.
In a 2018 interview, Macaulay claimed that his estranged dad allegedly threatened him to do well or he would hit him. He said he could show all the scars he accumulated from his time with his father.
Macaulay says that he learned how to be a good father through his wife, Brenda Song. He says seeing how she is with the kids makes him want to be a better man and father. The couple have two sons, Dakota and Carson.
