The Epstein Files Transparency Act is making slow progress, with the release of thousands more documents last Friday. Donald Trump features in a number of files. But according to the Department of Justice, claims made in the newly published are actually fake. In a social media statement, the DOJ called the claims “unfounded and false.”
The DOJ called the claims in the Epstein Files “sensationalist”
The statement, posted to the DOJ’s X account, references “false” claims about the President. It adds that if they were true, they “certainly would have been weaponized against President Trump already.”
It’s not actually clear which specific claims the statement is referring to, nor how they could be used against Trump. The latest batch of files revealed more about the President’s ties to the convicted sex offender, though, including that Trump flew on Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet eight times in the mid-1990s.
The files also mention FBI tips about Trump’s connections to Epstein and the parties they hosted at their properties in the early 2000s. With thousands of files released on Friday, there could be more documents that detail the pair’s relationship yet to come to light.
Last month, Trump told reporters he had “nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein.” He added: “I threw him out of my club many years ago because I thought he was a sick pervert. And I guess I would turn out to be right.”
Trump isn’t the only presidential figure to make an appearance in the files. Bill Clinton also features in several recently released photographs, spurring a surprising defense from Trump.
The President was compelled to sign a law requiring the release of all Epstein-related files following widespread public pressure. The original deadline was December 19, and it’s not yet clear when the remaining documents will be published.
