Chiefs’ Andy Reid Gives Update on Patrick Mahomes’ Injury

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is all in on his rehab after a serious knee injury, but he won’t be on the field this week. Coach Andy Reid recently revealed that Mahomes is getting his strength and mobility back, focusing on rehab instead of game-day action.

Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid has this to say on Patrick Mahomes’ ACL recovery

Patrick Mahomes seems to be focused on his recovery after undergoing surgery on December 15 in Dallas to repair torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his left knee. On Monday, December 29, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Mahomes is spending most of his time in rehab, putting in long hours and tackling it with intensity, though he still comes around to see the team. “He’s around, so he’s in the building and working,” Reid stated. “Doing his rehab and spending a lot of hours doing it. He’s really attacked that, and will continue to do that. So, he’s around and sees the guys, but most of his time is being spent rehabbing,” he added (via Sports Illustrated).

Because of that, Mahomes probably won’t make the trip to Las Vegas for the Chiefs’ last game of the 2025 season against the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. About Mahomes’ traveling, Reid said, “Probably not. Not this soon, no,” showing that the focus is on long-term recovery, not rushing back for one game. Meanwhile, star tight end Travis Kelce will play what could be his final game amid retirement speculation.

The Mahomes-Kelce duo has been electric together, holding several NFL records. The tight end praised Mahomes for his focus and determination during rehab. Kelce thinks that he is going to be “the most competitive guy possible in his rehab to get back”, and hopefully be ready by the start of the season. However, he added that the priority is doing what’s safest for the star quarterback while looking forward to a strong offseason return.
