George and Amal Clooney have officially obtained French citizenship, along with their twins, Alexander and Ella. The news appeared in French government documents released over the weekend, confirming a move that the couple had reportedly been considering for years. As such, they did not just want a change of scenery — they wanted to give their children a peaceful and safer place to grow up.

George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, got their French citizenship after George had recently explained why France felt right for their family while speaking to RTL earlier this month. He said privacy played a major part in their decision. In that, “Here, they don’t take photos of kids,” and “There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”
Moreover, Clooney added that he and Amal wanted their kids to have a chance at a normal childhood, something he didn’t feel they could offer in Los Angeles.
The couple bought a farmhouse in Brignoles in 2021, and Clooney has often talked about how much he enjoys the slower pace there. In an interview with Esquire, he said the farm allows the twins to stay grounded, explaining, “They’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
Additionally, Clooney admitted he worried about raising the kids in Hollywood. He told Esquire, “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life,” while France treats fame differently. Hence, a different attitude in France, and the privacy that comes with it, helped make the decision clear.
Clooney explained he loves the culture and has even taken French lessons. Ultimately, the French citizenship marks a brand new chapter for George and Amal Clooney — while they still keep a home in the United States, their happiest place is their French farm, where life moves at a much gentler pace.
