Michelle Obama recently reflected on an unforgettable moment from her parenting journey. On the latest episode of her and her brother’s “IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson” podcast, she opened up about an incident when she felt like she was done parenting.
Michelle Obama gets real about parenting on her show
Michelle Obama shares two daughters, Malia and Sasha, with her husband Barack Obama. In the new podcast episode, she opened up about parenting children with different personalities. She recounted a story from when Malia and Sasha were probably 7 and 3, respectively.
The “Becoming” author shared that Barack Obama was traveling at the time, and she was having a hard time getting her daughters to sleep. She recalled that she told her daughters to get ready and take their baths, but neither of them was listening.
Michelle explained, “I was in my frustrated mommy time, and I said, ‘Well, that’s it. You know, no one listens to me. I’m done parenting. You seem like you guys have this all figured out, and you can do this on your own. So have at it.'” Her daughters had very different reactions to her declaration.
While her older daughter quickly realised that she needed her mother, her younger daughter was unbothered. The Grammy winner said, “Sasha, my 3-year-old, was sitting on the stairs watching all this. She took her blankie, and she turned around and went back upstairs to watch TV, as if to say, like, “Thank God. At last, this is what I wanted from you, lady. I am 3. I can handle this. I’m going back upstairs.'”
The former first lady of the United States admitted that she directed the toddler to come back to her after she had walked up five steps. When Winkler asked if the sisters were still the same way, Michelle confirmed, saying, “Yes, exactly who they were. My younger daughter, she wants to learn her way. She doesn’t want to be told that this is how you do it. We tell her, but she’s gotta learn on her own.”
