Olympian Gives up Custody of 11-Year-Old Daughter After Abuse Allegations in Divorce

The divorce of a once-prominent figure skater has been settled. Oksana Baiul and Carlo Farina had been married since 2012. Her former manager filed for divorce last year, and shortly afterwards put their home in Shreveport, Louisiana, up for sale.

Oksana is best known for capturing the gold medal in the women’s singles skating event at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. The Ukrainian and Carlo have one daughter, Sophia, born in 2015. Following the divorce settlement, Oksana may have trouble seeing her for a while.

Sophia now holds all the cards regarding her relationship with her mother. A deal was reached for sole custody of Sophia, granted to Carlo according to US Weekly. The father and daughter will also be allowed to relocate to Las Vegas.

Despite the court’s ruling, Oksana’s relationship with Sophia may not be completely over. If Sophia agrees, Carlo will arrange a visit in accordance with the terms of the settlement. Meanwhile, they must list their Louisiana home and allow his ex-wife to live in another home they owned for a period of time. The Olympic gold medalist will be paid $550,000 from the net proceeds of the sale of their Shreveport home.

Oksana’s Olympic victory came amid all the talk heading into the event about the Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan scandal. The two-time European championship silver medalist was portrayed on screen in the 2017 film I, Tonya by Cassidy Balkcom, though it was uncredited. Margot Robbie plays Tonya in the movie. The Australian actress’s marriage to Tom Ackerley is said to be in limbo due to the lack of success of their production company.

In addition to the agreement reached, Oksana will retain all rights to her Sag-AFTRA earnings, as well as residuals and royalties from her books published during her marriage. The ex-couple also agreed to split $108,000 in an investment account. The former skater will not have to pay child support.
