Björk Speaks Out Over Donald Trump’s Threats to Annex Greenland

Björk has some choice words for Donald Trump and his attempts to make Greenland the 51st state of the U.S. The legendary Icelandic singer-songwriter called for her neighbour’s independence in the wake of the President’s proposal to annex Greenland.

Trump told reporters on January 4th that the U.S. “need[s] Greenland from the standpoint of national security,” and would function as an annexed U.S. territory. The President added that the U.S. would also “run Venezuela” as part of its expansion plans.

Björk says she has “horror chills” over President Trump’s remarks

Sharing a statement across social media, Björk spoke of her support for Greenland’s independence, citing her own nation’s historic struggles with colonization.

“I wish all Greenlanders blessing in their fight for independence,” the statement began. “Icelanders are extremely relieved that they managed to break from the Danish in 1944.  We didn’t loose [sic] our language (my children would be speaking Danish now), and I burst with sympathy for Greenlanders.”

Björk also highlighted the forced sterilization of 4500 Greenlandic women by the Danish state between 1966-1970 as an example. The 60-year-old expressed that “the Danish are treating Greenlanders like they are second class humans,” to this day.

“Colonialism has repeatedly given me horror chills up my back, and the chance that my fellow Greenlanders might go from one cruel coloniser to another is too brutal to even imagine,” the musician added.

“‘úr öskunni í eldinn’ , like we say in Icelandic, Dear Greenlanders, declare independence !!!!”

It is not Björk’s first time calling out Trump, having previously criticised the President on his environmental policies. In 2017, the singer took to social media to express that she was “tragically, deeply saddened” to learn that the then-newly inaugurated Trump had withdrawn the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement.

The Paris Climate Agreement is an international treaty with over 195 United Nations members, initially signed in 2016. The treaty aims to return the global surface temperature to pre-industrial levels. Björk encouraged her fans to sign a petition involving a climate lawsuit against the U.S.
