Theories that there’s another episode of Stranger Things Season 5 – which supposedly came to an end on New Year’s Day – have been gaining a lot of traction on social media this week.
Fans theorized that the finale we saw wasn’t actually the real deal and that Netflix would drop the final, well, final on January 7th. This became known as #conformitygate, with viewers arguing that The Duffer Brothers, who created the show, conformed to pressure and gave us a safer and less divisive ending. Is there a Stranger Things Season 5, Episode 9 secret episode coming to Netflix?
Sadly for Stranger Things fans (us included), there will be no more episodes for Season 5. The official Stranger Things Instagram account has been updated, and gives a pretty definitive answer. “ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING,” it reads.
Confirmation that there’s no secret Stranger Things episode has devastated fans, many of whom were convinced otherwise. One TikToker had previously compiled over 30 pieces of “evidence” that a ninth episode would drop. In his video, @andrewsvisual suggested the eighth episode showed us a version of events created by Vecna.
“Imagine ending a show SO BADLY that fans start believing that there’s a missing secret episode instead of the finale,” someone said in response. “Bro just drop it. The show is over,” someone said. “Denial is the first sign of grief,” another commented.
Over on X, similar conversations swirled. One person said the entire Stranger Things fandom is “currently in a collective psychosis.” They described it as a “coping mechanism” for The Duffer Brothers “bad” writing. “There is no Easter bunny, there is no toothfairy AND THERE IS NO CONFORMITY GATE,” another X user argued.
While Stranger Things as we know it is over, there are several spin-offs in motion. One Last Adventure, a documentary about the making of Season 5, drops on Netflix on January 12th. An animated series, called Stranger Things: Tales of ’85, is also due to drop sometime this year.
