The circumstances surrounding the death of James Ransone have been revealed. The actor, known for shows such as The Wire, died in Los Angeles in December.
James’s last credit film appearance came last year in the sequel to Black Phone, while he was also featured in an episode of Poker Face. Throughout his life, he openly shared his struggles with heroin and alcohol addiction. James alleged that as a young child, he’d been sexually abused by his math tutor in 1992. He previously stated that abuse played a factor in his substance abuse problems. He also claimed that is gave him, as he out it, a lifetime of shame and embarrassment.
James Ransone died at 46 by suicide
For a long time, it appears as though James was not mentally well. His December 29th death certificate, obtained by US Weekly, states suicide as the reason behind it. That ruling was made by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, who determined the cause of death to be a hanging.
There was an outpouring of tributes following news of James’ death. His co-star from the movie Tangerine Mya Taylor called James “such a sweet and funny guy.” Their director on that film, Sean Baker, said he will miss him dearly.
James is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and two children, Jack and Violet. Their daughter Violet just celebrated her fourth birthday in May. To help the family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe page has been set up. To date, over $200,000 has been raised.
In 2009, James wrote a first-person article for Malibu Magazine about hitting rock bottom before getting sober after meeting his wife. He said before meeting her, he weighed a mere 115 pounds and was about $30,000 in debt while also developing a heroin addiction.
Following his death, Jamie shared a fundraiser for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. James was 46.
