President Donald Trump admits that he should look into taking a drug to lose weight. The 79-year-old spoke with various journalists for The New York Times at the Oval Office on Wednesday, January 7, and spoke about his health during the interview. This comes amid concerns about the president’s age, as Trump will turn 80 years old in June this year.
Trump floats idea of taking a GLP-1 drug
Trump shared during the NYT interview that he has never taken a GLP-1, such as Zepbound and Wegovy, but floated the idea that he might in the future. “I probably should,” he admitted.
“I’ve gone out of my way to take physical exams more than anybody,” he continued. “I just feel it’s important because I think that people that are president ideally should be in good health, and they should be good cognitively.”
Official reports of Trump’s physical exams note that the president had lost twenty pounds between his two terms, dropping from a listed 244 lbs. in 2020 to a listed 224 lbs. in 2025.
That said, last week the president shared with The Wall Street Journal that he takes a large dose of aspirin on a daily basis, more than the recommended dosage given by his doctors. Trump said he does this so that he can have “nice, thin blood pouring through my heart,” though he believes that one of the side effects has been visible bruises on his hands.
Elsewhere in the interview, Trump admitted that he disliked exercise, apart from playing golf. “I just don’t like it,” he said. “It’s boring. To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that’s not for me.”
Concerns over Trump’s health were reignited when he had trouble staying awake at the Oval Office and was seen dragging his right leg as he exited a vehicle during the New Year’s Eve event at Mar-a-Lago.
