Survivor 49 recently wrapped up, with Savannah Louie being crowned the Sole Survivor. Overall, Survivor 49 was one of the most well-received seasons of the New Era. The cast was electric, there was some good drama, and most importantly, some impressive strategic gameplay.
However, the positivity around Survivor 49 has recently been tainted. Before every Survivor season, the players are together at Ponderosa for a pre-season briefing. To make things fair, the cast aren’t allowed to speak or engage with each other to prevent the early forming of alliances. While the majority of Survivor cast members have followed these rules, some members of the Survivor 49 cast allegedly chose not to.
Before Survivor 49 aired, it was revealed that some contestants had violated the pregaming rules

On every season of Survivor, two alternate players fly out with the main cast in case someone has to drop out at the last minute. There are male and female alternates, who are ready to step in at any time. Before Survivor 49 began airing, it was revealed that for the first time ever, both alternates had made it to the main cast. Jason Treul opened up about being an alternate during the mat chat, while MC Chukwujekwu joined the season as the female alternate. Both joined the Hina Tribe. Jason ended up placing thirteenth, while MC placed tenth.
Several stories emerged explaining that Jason and MC replaced two players. Jeff Probst revealed that the replaced players had been pre-gaming and had broken several rules. Although details weren’t revealed, it’s evident that the two players had seriously disregarded the preseason rules. Since Jason and MC were both on the Hina Tribe, the replaced players would’ve been on the same tribe. It’s possible that they knew this and tried to form an alliance before the game began.
Finalist Sage Ahrens-Nichols later revealed that Sophi Balerdi and Jake Latimer both allegedly pregamed

Sage Ahrens-Nichols made it to Final Tribal Council, where she ultimately placed third. Shortly after the finale aired, Sage shared on social media that she planned to share some things about the season. She hinted at cheating before the game, and invited players who participated to contact her to explain why. Sage emphasized that she planned to reveal details, including names, which caught the attention of many fans.
While Sage indicated that there were several alleged offenders, she ultimately chose to reveal only two. The first was Sophi Balerdi, who placed second. Sage also indicated that Jake Latimer was involved. Jake was a pivotal player during the first few episodes, but ended up being medically evacuated after being bitten by a sea krait. Sophi and Jake were both on the Kele Tribe, so it makes sense that they would pregame together. At the start of the season, Jake and Sophi proclaimed that they were number one allies. However, they were never really seen initially bonding. Sage’s allegations could explain this, as they could’ve bonded before the game even began.
Since there are only two alternates every season, it’s possible that production had to choose the worst offenders to replace. If Sophi and Jake pregamed, but not as hard as the others, it’s possible production allowed them to stay. While it’s still breaking the rules, the season can’t go on without the full cast of eighteen players.
Survivor 49 pre-juror Annie Davis recently supported Sage’s claims

Shortly after Sage’s allegations, her fellow Survivor 49 player Annie Davis defended her claims. Annie was the second player voted out and was on the Kele Tribe with Sophi and Jake. She admitted that she agreed with Sage and that she had witnessed multiple players talking before the game. Annie emphasized that she remembered players talking at night, when they were only supposed to leave their individual tents to go to the bathroom. While she didn’t name names like Sage, she indicated that there were several offenders.
The Survivor 49 cheating scandal has quickly become one of the most memorable things about the season. Survivor fans were shocked to learn of the news, especially since Sophi made it all the way to Final Tribal Council. Going forward, Survivor will likely be sure to implement extra strict measures for players prior to the game beginning.
Survivor is available to stream on Paramount+.
