How the Duffer Brothers Worried Netflix With Stranger Things Finale

A recently released Netflix documentary on the popular Stranger Things series revealed issues with the finale script. Show creators Ross and Matt Duffer had issues when it came to figuring out the show’s conclusion.

The two-hour documentary, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, debuts today. It features Matt and Ross in the writers’ room and documents their planning of Stranger Things’ final script.

Matt and Ross are arguing in the documentary as writers try to assist with the show’s conclusion. The team couldn’t agree on the ending for Millie Bobby Brown’s character Eleven, who would meet her final demise at the series’ conclusion.

“The longer it goes, the more stories you have to tie up and the more character arcs you have to end. The more expectations there are with the audience,” Matt chimed in. “How do you meet those expectations but surprise the audience still?”

Not having an ending created issues during filming. To prepare costumes, special effects and set designs, the crew needed Matt and Ross’ input, since there was no final script. Matt said, “It’s not like we don’t know what the ending is. It’s all plotted out. I just have to write it. We are just low on time. I used to be, like, seven days a week and I can’t do it anymore. I have two kids now and I just … It’s a tough career to have with kids.”

In the documentary, the crew discusses the issue of creating sets without a script. One crew member says, because a final script won’t be available in time, planning is based on talks with Matt and Ross.

Due to weather, Episode 8 had to be filmed before the script was completed. Ross said, “It was the most difficult writing circumstances we have ever found ourselves in. Not just because there was the pressure of we had to make sure the script was good, but there’s never been so much noise at the same time.”

Matt says, “We went into production without having a finished script for the finale. That was scary because we wanted to get it right. It was the most important script of the season.”
