Growing up on Britain’s Isle of Wight, Below Deck Mediterranean’s Cathy Skinner always had a natural affinity for the sea.
Practically from the minute she arrived, she and deckhand Max Salvador hit it off. “Our connection was something I wasn’t looking for,” Cathy admitted. “He is the complete opposite of me … Max is just an amazing person.”
Cathy wondered if her Below Deck Mediterranean romance with Max was “real”
After returning to shore, Cathy joined a Zoom to spill some Below Deck tea with Decider.
Though she was initially shy after joining the crew, as soon as she met Max, it was “full steam ahead, which I definitely don’t regret.”
“He’s the complete opposite of me,” she said. “Max is a very immature, but in a nice, funny way. He is light-hearted and doesn’t take things seriously. I am quite serious. It was nice to have someone that balanced me. It’s what I needed while I was there.”
While she was on charter, Cathy received news that her stepfather had passed away. In that moment, the support of the crew and Captain Sandy “meant everything” to her. When her mother encouraged her to stay and not come home, Cathy realized it was the right decision.
“I would have been so lonely,” she shared. “It was right to stay onboard … having the absolute time of my life. People from the crew and production still check in on me. I’m very thankful.”
When Max wanted her to be his girlfriend after only a short time, she stopped him. “On a yacht, one week feels like a month,” she confessed. “I’m very much a realist and I had to say, ‘Hey, I’ve actually known you for only a couple of weeks.'”
“I just wanted to make sure that it was real,” she added. “It wasn’t me saying, like, “No, never.” It was me saying, ‘Hey … hold your horses, buddy.’ In real life, I’d want to date him for at least six months [before considering] being his girlfriend.”
