The Golden Globes hosting gig is known to come with a certain amount of leniency. After all, who doesn’t want to poke fun at over-indulged celebs? But Nikki Glaser went a step further and criticized CBS News – a potentially riskier move considering the Awards have a five-year broadcast deal with CBS. Even riskier – sources say the comedian didn’t the gag past studio bosses before the show.
Nikki Glaser took a shot at CBS News while hosting the Golden Globes
Nikki understood the assignment during her second Globes hosting stint on Sunday. Along with the usual fare about Leonardo DiCaprio (it’s just too easy), and a rather NSFW comment about Michael B Jordan, she also took a shot at CBS. She announced: “The award for most editing goes to CBS News. Yes. CBS news: America’s newest place to see-BS-news.”
The audience loved the joke, with loud laughter ringing out from the (presumably buzzed) celebs. But the real question is how studio bosses took the jibe. After all, the Globes is broadcast by the CBS Network and its parent company, Paramount. And according to insiders, Nikki didn’t run the potentially controversial joke past division bosses in advance, reports Page Six.
The quip followed a less-than-smooth few weeks for newly installed CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, whose decision to kill a 60 Minutes segment on deportations to an El Salvador prison sparked headlines and internal backlash. CBS News also previously drew President Trump’s ire after he claimed the network edited a Kamala Harris interview to make her look better before the 2024 election. He sued for “election interference,” and CBS’ parent company eventually settled for $16 million.
But according to an industry insider, Nikki’s joke is no biggie. The source told Page Six that Nikki wouldn’t have needed to run it past bosses first. They revealed: “The news division is fully separate,” adding “Let’s move on.”
Oh, okay. So, about that Leo joke…
