Robert Downey Jr. has this to say about Timothee Chalamet
Timothee Chalamet’s prospects for an Oscar nomination for his role in Marty Supreme received a considerable boost with Robert Downey Jr. raving about his performance. At a Q&A session for the film, Downey, who was the moderator of the event, expressed his admiration for Chalamet’s work. Downey, who recently bagged the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2024), lavished Chalamet with praise, hailing him as “one of the greats” within the acting community.
As per Variety, Downey reflected on Chalamet’s pursuit of greatness. He shared a personal anecdote from when he was 30 years old and working with Norman Jewison on Only You. The actor had asked Jewison if he thought he was “one of the greats.” To this, Jewison responded, “Mr. Downey, that remains to be seen.”
Downey then declared that, in his opinion, Chalamet has achieved that status with Marty Supreme. “And I want to say in front of God and everyone in this audience here with you that as of ‘Marty Supreme,’ it no longer remains to be seen. Let’s hear it for, Timothée Chalamet,” stated the Iron Man star.
Chalamet had candidly expressed his ambition to become a great actor during his 2025 SAG Awards acceptance speech. The Wonka actor was bestowed with the best actor award for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.
Timothee Chalamet’s performance in Marty Supreme has catapulted him to Oscar frontrunner for Best Actor. The role has already garnered accolades from the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes. Additionally, he received a SAG nomination and was included on the BAFTA longlist in the Best Actor category.
Following the conclusion of Chalamet’s Oscar season for Marty Supreme, the actor will embark on an international press tour later this year to promote Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. The third movie of the Dune franchise will hit theaters on December 18. This coincides with the release date of Downey’s Avengers: Doomsday.
