Even conservative newspapers are concerned that Donald Trump has lost his mind, especially in his pursuit to claim Greenland from Denmark. Holman W. Jenkins, Jr., the editorial board member for The Wall Street Journal, has written a scathing opinion piece that calls the president’s actions “foolishness.” This includes his aggression against Norway due to his perceived slight that the country (that is, instead of the Norwegian Nobel Committee) decides who receives the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Wall Street Journal says Trump could be experiencing “cognitive decline”
Jenkins suggests that Donald Trump “may be flirting with cognitive decline” and that the United States would greatly benefit him to seek a mental health professional.
“Mr. Trump’s preoccupation with owning Greenland, like his Nobel Prize obsession, would be best addressed elsewhere: in therapy,” he writes in WSJ, despite the paper’s prior support of the president.
“I’m perfectly serious,” he continues. “Once he started unburdening himself of his insecurities and traumas, he probably wouldn’t stop for a week. The world, and the U.S., would be better for it.”
He believes that the president “needs therapy more than the United States needs to own the island to ensure its defense.”
Jenkins points out that Trump’s alleged threat to occupy Greenland would be a violation of not only international law, but U.S. law as well. Congress has made it illegal for the US to threaten or use force against a nonoffending member of the United Nations, such as Denmark. If Trump were to occupy Greenland using military force, he says it would be grounds for a third impeachment against the president.
“This isn’t international law, MAGA types, it’s U.S. law,” Jenkins emphasizes. “A Trump order to occupy an otherwise peaceful and unthreatened Greenland would likely be illegal six ways from Sunday. The U.S. military wouldn’t obey it. The Supreme Court would enjoin it.”
Moreover, he believes the president knows what the consequences are if he goes down this route over Greenland, yet he’s doing so anyway. “The whole kerfuffle fits better under the heading: Why is he throwing his presidency away? Look at his tariff and immigration overkill, his sagging approval ratings, likely GOP defeat in the House midterms, his probably impeachment soon after.”
