First impressions are everything. That may be a saying many agree with, but it’s not the end-all, be-all in the eyes of Michelle Obama.
The former First Lady is opening up about her initial meeting with Barack Obama. The two initially met when the future President was working at the law firm Sidley Austin in 1989. Michelle had been assigned to be his advisor at the firm for three months. Back then, it appears she was a little skeptical about him.
Michelle didn’t feel initial “potential” to Barack Obama
The first interaction between Michelle and Barack Obama was anything but love at first sight. On the show, Call Her Daddy, Michelle said initially she didn’t see Barack “as a potential because I was his advisor.” However, over time, feelings started to surface between them. The Grammy Award winner says what drew her to him was the fact that she didn’t have to change her fundamental self around him.
In addition, she says that they had a similar sense of humor and made similar jokes, which she noticed. She says this revelation made him think, while it was something appealing to both. The couple started dating later that summer and were eventually engaged in 1991. They would marry a year later and have two daughters, Sasha and Malia.
Lately, there has been speculation that the couple’s relationship is rocky. Last September, the former Senator said he’d dug himself in deep with Michelle, partly because of his career in politics. The two have dismissed any rumors that they’ll be splitting up.
As for dating advice, Michelle cautioned people not to push too hard to try to change someone. She admits that there are things she does not have control over with Barack and vice-versa. Michelle says at times they let each other do their own things while accepting that part of each other.
