Prince Harry Supports Elizabeth Hurley in Court Battle Against Tabloids

As Elizabeth Hurley went to court against Daily Mail publishers, Prince Harry attended in support. This is as he brings his own case against the same publisher to court.

On January 21, the Duke of Sussex answered questions about his grievances against the publisher of Daily Mail and Mail. The other plaintiffs include Elton John and his husband David Furnish, and Sadie Frost, Jude Law’s ex-wife. Associated Newspapers is accused of using unlawful methods to gather information.

On Thursday, January 22, Prince Harry attended the High Court in London in support of actress Elizabeth Hurley, along with her son Damian. She provided her statement on the witness stand, after Associated Newspapers’ lawyer Antony White questioned the model. She was asked why there were no complaints about the 15 articles when these were published between 2002 and 2011. The actress said she hadn’t complained because “they were in essence true. I believe it’s because people were listening to me speak,” she explained.

After being shown articles that included her relationship with her son’s late father, Steve Bing, Elizabeth broke down. She then said she would never publicly state anything “she didn’t want my son to read.”

Prince Harry was also due in court on Thursday, however the date was moved up. Consequently, this was a result of Antony’s unexpectedly short opening statement. For this reason, Elizabeth’s testimony was moved up.

On January 21, the prince completed his almost two hours of emotional testimony. He said the newspapers continued to target him and his wife, Meghan Markle, for years after he brought the case years ago. It made her life “an absolute misery,” Prince Harry said.  “By standing up here and taking a stand against them, this has continued to come after me. And they have made my wife’s life an absolute misery, my Lord.”

He said, “It’s fundamentally wrong to put all of us through all of this again. What’s required is an apology and some accountability. It’s a horrible experience.”

According to the prince’s witness statement, the legal action was in response to “vicious” and “sometimes racist” coverage of his wife.
