It seems like everybody is having their own Heated Rivalry moment. The show everyone is talking about has inspired many to open up about their sexuality, among other things. Gus Kenworthy is the latest A-list celebrity to discuss a secret he had years ago.
The HBO Max program tells the story of two hockey players on opposite teams who have a secret relationship. As it turns out, the Olympic freestyle skier had a previous relationship without barely anyone knowing, until now.
Gus Kenworthy and Miley Cyrus were close before he came out as gay
Before coming out of the closet himself, Gus was very tight-lipped about his personal life. The athlete-turned-actor tells The New Yorker that he “had a secret relationship, with these clandestine meetings and hookups.” His confidante was Miley Cyrus, with whom he was really close while keeping his personal life as quiet as possible.
Gus came out as gay a year after capturing a silver medal in 2014 at the Sochi Olympics. When this was revealed, Miley came out in support of him, sharing how much respect she had for the skier. Gus is often considered one of the first action sports stars to come out at the Olympics.
For him, the character of Scott Hunter on Heated Rivalry is one that he connects with. The captain of the New York Admirals, played by François Arnaud, has a romance with a barista named Kip on the show. The Canadian-born actor recently teased that Scott and Kip’s relationship may be more prominent in season two.
After coming out as gay, Gus previously dated reality star Matthew Wilkas. Gus had represented the United States at the Olympics, saying the 2022 Games in Beijing would be his last hurrah. Last week, though, he officially made the Great Britain team for the upcoming Olympics in February in Milan. He was born in Chelmsford.
