Kanye West Reacts to Accusations Antisemitism Apology Is a ‘PR Move’

Kanye West made the surprise move of taking out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal yesterday to apologize to the Jewish and African-American communities. Titled “To Those I Hurt,” Kanye, who goes by Ye, blamed a car accident for his recent years of divisive, offensive, and racist remarks. The rapper said the accident cause damaged to his prefrontal lobe, damaging his critical thinking skills.

Ye said that the accident was an explanation, but not an excuse, for his recent years. He added that he “love[s] Jewish people,” and was “not a Nazi or antisemite.” He also apologized to fellow African-Americans for “hav[ing] let you down” — but the reaction to the apology ad was divisive.

In an exclusive with Vanity Fair, Kanye was grilled about the apology ad. The publication pointed out that it was not the first time the musician had apologized for antisemitic remarks. In the interview, Vanity Fair told Ye that some readers see the ad as a PR move to revive his career.

Kanye responded that, “as a public figure, so many people follow and listen to my every word.” “It’s important that they realize and understand what side of history that I want to stand on. And that is one of love and positivity,” he added.

Kanye said he began to regret his actions after coming out of a bipolar episode. “I had disconnected from my true self,” he told Vanity Fair. He also confirmed he had taken medication to treat his condition. Having previously been reluctant to medicate, he was now open to finding the right dosage.

“I’m just trying to find what works for me so that I can continue down this positive course,” he explained.

In the ad, Kanye also said he had a “dominion” over his wife, the artist and architectural designer Bianca Censori. The musician was accused of coercive control after several appearances where Bianca appeared visibly nude at public events.
