Teyana Taylor might be at the peak of her career, but it was never easy. However, she has one person to thank – Beyoncé – whose enduring words helped her stay in the game. Taylor recently opened up to PEOPLE on how Queen Bey’s advice shaped her future and helped her move forward.
According to the 35-year-old star, Beyoncé told her to “invest in yourself” and not to take things personally, as “This is a business.” The “One Battle After Another” star even recalled that Queen Bey gave her some valuable lessons because she had known Taylor since she was 15.
Taylor also revealed that when she “came into the business,” she “didn’t understand certain things.” So, she “would go” to Beyoncé. And as per Taylor, she took the advice of not taking things personally for “the long haul. She explained, “I didn’t know that certain things would be isolating where you would feel like, ‘Oh s—, in order for it to be done the way I see it in my head, I’m going to have to do this s— myself.”
The “Concrete” singer even stressed that Beyoncé made her understand that money matters, too.
“Every single check ain’t going to hit your pocket, and that’s only if you truly believe in yourself. Believing in yourself is investing in yourself — and she taught me that,” said Taylor.
“That instilled in me if Beyoncé is this way and she’s so grounded and she’s so this, this is the way I need to be,” she continued. “And [Beyoncé], being as humble as she is and as grounded as she is, definitely showed me everything that I needed to know…and I don’t take for granted,” Taylor added.
