A famed Canadian actress has died. Catherine O’Hara rose to fame in the early 90’s, playing the mother of Macaulay Culkin in the first two Home Alone movies. She was also in films like Beetlejuice and Dick Tracy.
The Toronto-born star was a dual Canadian and American citizen who was previously named the honorary mayor of Brentwood in California in 2021. She was a part of the famed television series Schitt’s Creek, which starred her alongside fellow Canadian comedian Eugene Levy.

Over eight years after his on-screen dad died, Macaulay’s Home Alone mom has passed away. TMZ confirmed the sad news on Friday. Her fictional husband in the first two installments of that movie franchise was John Heard, who had a case of cardiac arrest, which took his life in July 2017.
No cause of death has been uncovered for Catherine yet. She was a noted comedian who began her acting career in sketch and improvisational comedy. She is the third renowned member of the Home Alone cast to die. Another Canadian comedian, she knew well that John Candy died of a heart attack in the mid 90’s.
He had a small role in the first Home Alone movie. Last year, Macaulay said John was like a father to him during the shooting of Home Alone. She was a part of a recent documentary about the late comedian last year called John Candy: I Like Me.
Catherine earned a Primetime Emmy Award for her work on the CBC show Schitt’s Creek. Among her most recent roles were in the Seth Rogen-created show The Studio. She was also a part of the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us. She previously won an Emmy for her writing in the famed SCTV.
Catherine was 71 and leaves behind two children and had been married to Bo Welch since 1992.
