Macaulay Culkin is grieving the loss of his beloved on-screen mom. Catherine O’Hara played Kate McCallister in the first two Home Alone movies, which launched Macaulay’s career as a child star. The original film, directed by Chris Columbus, earned over $450 million at the box office. The sequel was also popular, grossing over $350 million at the box office.
In the years that followed those two hugely successful films, Macaulay and Catherine maintained a special bond. The Schitt’s Creek co-star was on hand just over two years ago when Macaulay got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Catherine O’Hara is dead at 71
It’s been over 35 years since Home Alone first came out, but Macaulay hasn’t forgotten about his time spent with Catherine. The actress, known for films such as A Mighty Wind and Beetlejuice, died at the age of 71 on Friday.
Following the sad news, the Golden Globe nominee took to Instagram to express his dismay upon learning of her death. “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more,” shared Macaulay. The father of two concluded his post by saying “I love you” and “I’ll see you later.”
News of her death comes over eight years after Macaulay lost his Home Alone dad. John Heard played Catherine’s husband in the first two installments of that franchise. He died in July 2017 from cardiac arrest. There is still no word as to the exact circumstance of Catherine’s death. She was rushed to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency at her home.
Catherine was married to art director Bo Welch since 1992, and the couple have two children. During her illustrious acting career, she won Emmy Awards for writing on the famed sketch comedy program SCTV. She also collected an Emmy for her role on the renowned Canadian sitcom Schitt’s Creek, co-starring Eugene Levy.
Earlier this year, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress on the show The Studio.
