Chappell Roan addressed the chatter head-on after stepping onto the red carpet at the 2026 Grammy Awards in a daring sheer burgundy gown that quickly became one of the night’s most discussed fashion moments. Following the ceremony, the singer shared photos of the look on Instagram, showing off the Mugler design. The dress featured translucent fabric and was secured to her body with bedazzled faux piercings, revealing significant skin and sparking widespread online debate.
Chappell Roan defends ‘outrageous’ Grammys dress, says, ‘It’s really fun and silly’
Despite the reaction to her Mugler dress at the 2026 Grammys, Chappell Roan made it clear on Instagram that she wasn’t bothered. “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” she wrote, adding that the look was “awesome and weird.” She encouraged fans to embrace “free will,” calling it “really fun and silly.” She went on, saying, “Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”
Roan’s Mugler gown also showed off temporary body art. She had a playful pony design on her chest and a lace-style tattoo pattern across her back. She added bold Buccellati jewelry, including a gold choker and matching drop earrings. At times, she wore a sheer burgundy cape over the gown to soften the look.
The “Hot to Go” singer entered the night with two major nominations, Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, both for her track “The Subway.” While she didn’t take home a trophy, Roan still dominated headlines. Record of the Year ultimately went to Kendrick Lamar for “Luther,” while Best Pop Solo Performance was won by Lola Young for “Messy.”
Roan later changed looks to present the Best New Artist award to Olivia Dean, stepping onstage in a flowing, ethereal Rodarte Fall/Winter 2007 gown that sharply contrasted her bold red carpet outfit. Previously, at the 2025 Grammys, she also drew attention in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier ballgown.
