Lady Gaga has shared the emotional reason she teared up at Bad Bunny’s Grammy Awards win.
Bad Bunny (real name: Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) won the award for Album of the Year this weekend. Lady Gaga was also nominated, but Bad Bunny took the prize home for his album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos.
Lady Gaga called out the current tensions in the USA
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight after the show, Lady Gaga was asked why she had tears in her eyes over Bad Bunny’s win. “I’m just so happy for him, and what he means to people is so incredibly important,” she said.
“He’s a brilliant musician and human being. He’s so incredibly kind, and I thought what he said was incredibly important right now and so inspiring,” the singer went on, before pointing to recent events in the US which have been both tragic and dividing.
“What’s happening in this country is incredibly heartbreaking,” she said. “We’re so lucky to have leaders like him who are speaking up for what is true and what is right.”
And speaking of, well, speaking up, Bad Bunny did just that when he accepted his award. “Before I say thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out,” he said on stage, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“We’re not savages, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens – we’re humans,” the musician, who is due to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show this weekend, added.
Bad Bunny continued: “The hate gets more powerful with more hate. The only thing that’s more powerful than hate is love, so, please, we need to be different. If we fight, we have to do it with love.”
