How This American Idol Contestant Made Carrie Underwood Cry

Earlier this week, one American Idol contestant brought tears to Carrie Underwood’s eyes. When Hannah Harper opened her mouth to audition for Season 24, so much more than just a miniature Dolly Parton spilled out. Instead, Hannah’s original lyrics spoke to a core, “relatable” aspect of motherhood, which broke Carrie in all the right ways.

Carrie Underwood was brought to tears by the “relatable” song about postpartum depression

Last Monday, Hannah stepped up to the audition plate to sing her original song, “String Cheese.” The lyrics touch on her personal journey with postpartum depression, she explained.

Hannah explained why she named her song as she did. “My youngest is 1, and shortly after he was born, I had postpartum depression, and so I was sitting on my couch,” she began, stopping to compose her rising emotions. “I was sitting on my couch wallowing, and you have boys, you know. Everybody wants to touch you, and I didn’t want to be touched.”

“And my youngest son, I was just having a pity party, praying that the Lord would calm my spirit, and my son kept coming up to me. He said, ‘Mom, open this. Open my cheese.’ I’m like, ‘Leave me alone with the doggone cheese.’”

But when Hannah “finally opened his cheese,” she “realized God had put me in that place. And that, where I was in my house, was the biggest ministry I could ever have in being a mom. So, I gathered myself, and I got up off the couch, and I quit throwing a pity party,” Hannah said.

And as Hannah sang about the passing of time with children, Carrie’s eyes filled with tears. She then passed Hannah on to Hollywood, noting, “Well, that’s about the most relatable song I think I’ve ever heard.”

American Idol airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
